I once read a particular book about the Beatles and it went into detail about every song and had a quote by one of them explaining it.
I'm pretty sure Paul said that it came from when his daughter showed him a picture of a drawing she did at school and described it as "Lucy in the sky with diamonds." They claim to have not noticed the correlation until much later on in an interview but I don't believe it either. They admitted to putting hidden meanings in their music and artworks and we'll probably never understand their inside jokes.
