A Series of Stupid Questions

Hopefully someone can clarify this stuff succintly...
At what stage of growth can you know for certain if you have a male or female?
Do both males and females produce seeds (whether it's one seed or 1000)?
Are males worthless?

1) either at sexual maturity (which is about a month+ after seed germination) or about a week into flowering. 2)Neither produce seeds on their own. The female must be pollinated by the male, and then she produces seeds. 3) unless you're breeding, pretty much

Thanks
How long do you have once they've reached sexual maturity to remove the males before they pollinate?

Are you indoors? If so you can remove them anytime before you start your plants on 12/12 light cycle (make them flower).

if they're not flowering I suppose you can go awhile, but generally it's best to just remove the males immediately. I left a male for only 3 days after he showed sex and got about 10 seeds in one of my crops. they start releasing pollen extremely fast.

I give myself 10 days from the first male flower i see(with assisted vision). And have NEVER had a problem with pollination. Then the males are destroyed. Males with even a 10x loop are going to be easy to pic out. Your male had most likely become male way longer than you must have know to release pollen.

why on earth do you use a loupe to look at males? man balls are very easily distinguishable with the naked eye.

i separate males from females by looking at the preflowers when they are very young. With the loop i can see hairs coming from the tiny female preflowers, or the funny looking male preflower. Way before balls are even involved. I wasn't trying to be a dick i just got the 10 day thing from a very very reputable large scale medical cannabis cultivator. Very different recommendation than your 3.

I believe this is what you speak of....
Female on the left in the first pic
The first pic is about as early as you wanna start sexing.

I don't think you need a loupe to see pistils though.... they're pretty visible with the naked eye.

Thanks magash for the photo as that was what i was trying to describe. When it's time to sex plants from seeds im very ready to clear out the space for equal size clones to replace the males..... I have no time or space for males.

That diagram definitely helps but I'm going to need to see several males and then several females to get this down to a science. It seems like the Pistils are the best defining part to distinguish the two.

9 times out of 10, males will show off their balls first and the females will be showing their hairy vag a week or 2 after.
That sexing tek is a good way to do things, but it will take a few tries to see the differences. So this will be a learning garden for you and you should be checking your plants for the indictors shown in the diagram. Look and let them mature and then compare what you saw to what was presented to you here. After a few grow's this will become second nature for you!

At what stage of growth can you know for certain if you have a male or female? There will be no specific time frame to tell. Some plants begin showing sex earlier than others. Males will generally show their pollen sacks before a female will show her pistils. They should usually begin to show signs of sex
Do both males and females produce seeds (whether it's one seed or 1000)? No. Females and Hermi's will make seeds. Males will not.
Are males worthless? To people looking for a bud harvest, then yes. If you are breeding or making hash, males are useful, although they won't produce a large amount of hash.

Thanks again everyone for answering.
What about with these expensive grow chambers....Do they really eliminate all odor and give the grower more privacy? I realize most growers take quite a bit of pride in their own projects and this would be a last resort, but in my circumstance I think it's best.

they certainly do, but you can build one that's just as good (or better since it can be customized to your space) for less than half the money.

It looks too complicated to build one. I wish there was a manual that tells you step by step with macro pics how to build the ones that are sold online. I've seen how some have done theirs but haven't jived with one of those systems. Not yet at least.
