 suggestions on cavity warfare

yo
i got this cavity on my furthest molar on the left side of my mouth, and today whilst eatin, it broke on the indside portion of the tooth(nearest the tounge) and now my tounge is constangly scraping this shard of tooth...and it hurts...
anyone know a quick painless solution short of pullin a castaway on it?

and dentists are like...idk
he'll shave it down and try to charge me $1000 and ill have to kick him in the shin and run out...
even a filling would cost me WAY too much

i took a nail file to it, and smoothed it down some. to where its not cutting my tounge, but it is still annoying.
the only thing that worrys me is they say not taking care of your teath can lead to serious heloth problems...but ive got more important things right now than my teeth/health...

I don't know man... I took bad care of my teeth for a while, ended up with a bad handful of cavities  ... Now I floss daily and brush 4-8 times a day. It just seems like a simple way to save money and pain in the long run.

I think it's more that when we evolved, it was only important that our teeth worked long enough to pump out some babies. In the middle ages, I think people typically started losing their teeth (to cavities and whatnot) around age 20.
Edit: I said "when we evolved"; obviously we're still evolving. But there aren't really many selective pressures (in the traditional sense of the word) operating on our species, so the past tense tends to slip out.

the file deal worked, and left just a chunk off the tooth, i think the cavity part is gone.
i think what it is, more so than a cavity(cuz i dont eat crap, and i take care of my body) is where i let this girl punch me in the jaw(she seriously hit harder than any man ive ever been hit by) and it chipped the molar right above it the exact same way as ths one is now about 5 years ago, and maybe, just maybe they both cracked and it just took till now to get soo much food pushed down into it to break it off...
thats the best i can hope for...cuz it doesnt hurt with cold or hot...

I had something similar happen.
A chunk broke off one of my back molars but there's no pain with it and I didn't even notice when it happened.
No sharp edges or anything.
I can't afford a dentist either so I just make sure I brush it really well.

yeah, im just gonna make sure i brush realllly deep down into that one specifically to make sure theres not food particles left in there(at least try to do this) and just monitor it closely and see if i notice a dark spot or if it starts getting painful
