Moving to California?

So, I was given the oportunity to move to Humboldt County California next year with three other friends. Our idea was to buy a manufactured home, work side jobs, and grow medical marijuana. I know all about collectives and the limit on how many plants you can grow and how exchanges with dispensaries work. We've all done considerable research on the topic and it seems like a wonderfully magical awesome idea...but...I don't know. I've read a lot about living in Cali and how expensive it is and how hard it is to find jobs, especially in Humboldt. Of course, where I'm at now isn't going to win any awards. It took me almost six months to find a shitty job in the service industry making $8.50/hr.
I'm not looking to become super rich and none of my friends are, I'm just worried about being able to make enough money to support ourselves and maybe put a little away.
Has anyone else had any luck with this enterprise (I'm talking about strictly legal grow ops)? What would be some other concerns that I should address with my friends before we take the plunge?

I guess it all depends on the deal you can find on a house and how well you can grow

From my understanding on the dispensary situation in California is that they have many many growers all trying to sell their stuff to the dispensaries and that it can be very very difficult to get them to accept your stuff. Just something to consider.

I live a few hours north of humboldt. 1. humboldt already has tons of growers that KNOW what their doing and fulfilling the market with high quality herb. 2.strictly legal you will get about $1500 a lb MAX from a collective. 3. You will not get a job here. I know people that have been looking for THREE YEARS and NOTHING.

How hard are they looking? Three years is a long damn time man.

This is mostly what I was afraid of. It seems like the market would already be inundated with likeminded stoners.
What about starting a delivery service?

Dude its california. If you havnt got your foot in the door already, its too late.
Everywhere already has a good market of suppliers, buyers, delivery services, hydro stores, etc.
Dont move here expecting to make money from weed when theres already monopolies in place producing high quality bud that average growers cant compete with. :\
just trying to save you alot of time, effort, and money man.

lol, no way. Cant compete with indoor aeroponic bud. ^_^
Youd be better off moving to another medical state and growing there as less people are probably supplying to coops there.
Oh yeah, and you obviously need a medical condition.

azshroomer is right on the money. i would add this though: while there are many growers in the north that flood the market with cheap high quality weed, there's a big demand for that in socal. socal gets a lot of indoor grown so its usually more expensive, but i know clubs love to get weed for cheap from up north, so if you'd be willing to do a transport type service you might find your way in on that

if your doctor approves and recommends for you the therapeutic use of cannabis you are permitted to transport a certain amount, as dictated by SB420 and local guidelines. however, should your doctor claim you need more than what is allowed by SB420, you are exempted from limits as to how much you can carry.
basically it works like this: most ppl get the card and are good with that, which they receive from prop 215 and regulated by SB420. vendors (sellers) get SB420 exemptions so that only prop 215 applies (which has no amounts set for patients)
i thought you'd done research???

I have. There is so much fucking info on this out there though and I've only been reading into it for about a week now. It's easy to get confused by it. Thanks for the link, I will be examining it closely.
My friend, the brains behind this, suggested delivery as a possibility. The only issue I saw was the price of gas and the stiff competition from other delivery services.

You'd be better off doing delivery in the LA area, IMO.
Humboldt is the main supplier of medical dank in CA. Shit, even my friends, whom sell illegitimately, get their shit from Humboldt, and I live in LA county.
San Bernardino County and Riverside County lack good delivery services. Riverside, in general, lacks medical marijuana. There are parts of CA that aren't saturated with clinics like LA and SF. Look there. Only then will you have any leverage over the already well-established MMJ community.
EDIT: But still, the competition will be steep. And it definitely won't be as easy as it sounds.

Let's say, hypothetically, this OP bred weed as well as anyone else around and has a top notch strain. Would it be possible, in your opinions, to gain a foothold in the market, perhaps with a single strain that is unlike all others?

Possibly.
His strain would have to be marketable, though. It's yeild should be phenomenal; it's THC levels should be in the 15-20%, at least.
The strain needs to be commercially stable in order to suffice for the growing demand of MMJ. But people would have to LOVE it before it would be seen in the clinics. But if everyone loved it, and he was the exclusive grower/breeder of the strain, success could be a possibility.

He should call his company, Mr. Nice Guy. They could hand out sample joints on the street and in da clubs.
