Ok, I've been at this grow thing since the mid 80's. Outdoor in Mendocino county and indoors still going since 85.
1. IR does not and can't spot plants. They use it to spot grow lights (very rare) and most common to spot waterlines. The waterlines outdoor growers use heat up in the sun. When dusk rolls around they spot the water lines cause they still have the warm water in them. Looks like spider webs but at the end of each web is a plant.
As far a spotting plants cause of color that happens in fall when dorks who think they can grow plant the plants in areas where the surrounding vegation turns brown in the fall and the emerald green plants stick out like sore thumbs.
Both of those account for about 10 to 15% of the plants that get busted. The other 85 to 90% are simply cause of stupid growers who trusted the wrong people.
Loose lips sink ships simple as that.

The documentary that the DEA guy talks about spotting the color is Marijuana Inc. Magash has a point about the fall thing, but in the vid, it looks like it is the middle of summer.
