Shooting straight up just insures that the bullet will reach the optimum altitude before falling towards the earth, and if wind resistance didn't exist it would return at the exact same speed it left the chamber. The terminal velocity of a bullet with earth air resistance is still enough to puncture the skin, and even skull. It will not matter what direction you shoot it, you just better hope it don't hit anyone.

It's not...Mythbusters did a thing on it. Its the same principal as dropping an item from a high point. I forget what law it is I learned it in physics back in high school.

if a bullet is shot at an angle it keeps the muzzle velocity the gun shot it out at which when it curves back down toward earth is dangerous because of the kinetice energy the bullet still has... if shot out straight up, once at the top of the trajectory it will have to stop completely and come back down because of the loss of kinetic energy due to gravity and atmosphere pressure, the bullet will not reach the same speed that it was shot out at on the way down due to terminal velocity because of friction from air resistance, this will not puncture your skin......maybe a bruise or concussion. if there was no atmosphere then it would still have the potential to kill.......  its all physics man, and mythbusters did this......

They do but those shots are put at an angle...I don't know if you don't believe us then trust the mythbusters and go watch 'em.

Well in most cases but with this one there really isn't any other way to test this than one...Do it...And if I remember correctly they did do it. So, based on what I saw I have to believe what I saw. Not only that if you don't believe them go pick up your damn physics book and read newtons law of whatever it is.

Ya it wouldnt kill you. Havent you heard the dropping a penny off of the empire state building myth? That penny reaches terminal velocity but would not kill you. Just like a bullet shot up in the air. If you shoot the bullet straight out then ya it has some potential to kill someone. But it also depends on what type of gun you are using. A .22 will travel a lot more distance than a shotgun will.

I'm pretty sure newtons law doesn't say "things shot straight up in the air wont come back going fast enough to kill."

The only time I said it would be the same speed was if their was no air resistance. Witch would be in a vacuum and gravity would decelerate just as fast as it would accelerate. All I know is according to what I was reading was that the terminal velocity of a bullet is still fast enough to kill, but I'm not going to do the math myself because I don't know how. Never took physics.

You know a penny isn't designed to kill, the bullet would come back down tip pointing down. The terminal velocity is relative to the object so you cant say one wont do it because the other doesn't. Bullets are designed to be aerodynamic, a penny is not.

In a pure vacuum yes it would never slow down......But everything else you are wrong about.

Really, a bullet isn't aerodynamic therefore designed to have less air resistance due to its shape? And if I'm wrong about everything you are also saying a penny is designed to kill. I really don't want to argue on a topic I have to google just to know answers to though, so I'll just agree to disagree with you.

theoretically yeah it is true that it would return at the same speed it left the chamber

a more simplified version of this that you could watch would be to have a friend throw a baseball straight up in the air, if it is going straight up then if it left his hand at 70mph then at that same point on the way down it would be going 70mph

When fired out of a gun do you really think after reaching terminal velocity and coming back down to earth that the point is coming first.....No. Bullets tumble in the air which creates more air resistance.

No I didn't say that and no he didn't say that either. I see arguing with this tard is getting nowhere. It won't kill you I'm not going to argue with you. When the bullet reaches its highest point it stops....Then it comes back down...I've been shooting guns my entire life. A bullet shot at an angle never stops thats why it can be deadly. If you want I will be glad to go lookup the laws surrounding this...You know on second thought fuck that you go look them up I already know the answer.
