Harvesting with Hot Water??
    #258249 - 07/31/09 05:13 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

I was thinking back 20+ years, and thought I'd bring this here..

Years ago, when my buddy and I grew weed, he used to use this trick...Seemed to work, IDK, but thoughts on the subject would be Grate..

As you pull up the entire plant to harvest, you dunk the roots in hot tap water for a minute or so...then hang the entire plant upside-down to dry...
The idea was to shock the plant into shooting all the resin, etc. outwards from the roots to the buds....

Whatya think???

Thankx,
Peace and Light

People have been tossing around stuff like this for a long time.
I've heard the same thing only using ice water, and also letting the roots  soak in ice water overnight to turn it purple.
None of these things IMO carry any weight (well apparently you can turn it purple like that) with regard to changing potency...rather than the "tricks" people talk about, its best to just be well educated in growing, have good genetics, and a nice green thumb.

For Sure!!
Education and research are essential..
In my case, the Green Thumb is a work in Progress....LOL...temps here get down enough to turn Purple...
Just wordering if any science behind the shock of hot water..

Sidenote:
Alot of the Purple strains that the Local dispensaries grow aren't that purple...seems their temps don't get down far enough...
Strange to see Purple ???, and then you look, and it's mostly green...LOL..

Thankx,
Peace and Light

well theres a difference between shocked purple and genetic purple, the later will heve more ofa purple hue, thats noticably lighter than green but that was shocked, that generally takes on a darker purple.

Chlorophyll isn't purple. All plants need chlorophyll to grow so it's not unusual for purple strains to have a lot of green. I've no experience growing purple strains. But it makes sense. If they were overly purple they'd have trouble making food. What is the purple anyway? Added colour to attract bees?

turning purple happen when the temps get really low,  im pretty sure the chlorophyll is effected by the cold like when leaves of trees turn orange and red in the fall. but some strains will turn purple at 80F. to me tho purple is all about the smell and taste i dont care what color it is it all turns the same colors when you smoke it.:ganja:

if you are trying to shock the plant the just pulling it out of the ground and exposing the roots should be enough.

Not always true though as stated by 42047

that is because of genetics not temps.

THC is mostly produced in the trichomes, and doesnt flow through the plant's vascular system, so any techniques trying to force the THC down into the buds usually dont work. Though it may be that it keep the plant alive long enough to help break down unwanted starches and chlorophyll to improve the overall appearance and smoke of the final product.

On a side note...it seems like most purple strains produce purple secondary pigments along with chlorophyll while the plant is alive, with the exception of certain genetics where the buds seem to produce purple pigments over chlorophyll. Most of the time though, these purple pigments are masked by the abundant chlorophyll. Cold stress seems to slow chlorophyll production and so you start to see this purple when the plant is exposed to cold weather in the fall. This seems to also be the case when purple strains are properly cured to help break down the green chlorophyll and let the purple pigments hidden beneath shine through. This seems to be the case for reds, purples..and sometimes blue colors as well. Think of it like deciduous trees in the fall. The colors that show up in the fall have been in the leaves the whole time, they just show up after the chlorophyll breaks down.

Also, ben are the trichomes purple in that pic? Seems like that strain of purple genetics would be awesome if it produces something in the resin glands that is bright purple...I needs to get me some of that:eek:

hope this helps :cool::thumbup:

The depth of these conversations. Its all genetics and PROPER MAINTENANCE! I see no other factors as of important or as a goal.  But its funny this is brought up as i was told of this trick TODAY in a private conversation. Ive seen and smoked buds this was done too and have nothing but good things to say about the quality and or potency. Im making some hash out of it tomorrow after further inspection of the massive trich's. Still think its genetics/maintenance that made it good, and an over protective/paranoid grower wanting to do EVERYTHING RIGHT or seeking an edge creating tricks like this. If you want a real tip Look into compost tea, or the grower of the largest plants in the guiness book of world records.Compost tea.

Check it out ...."A Rhode Island farmer says SoilSoup helped him grow a record-breaking pumpkin. Farmer Ron Wallace said that fresh SoilSoup a type of liquid organic fertilizer, helped him grow a 1,502 pound pumpkin. That’s heavier than the Guinness World Record for largest pumpkin set last year with a 1,469 pound pumpkin.

SoilSoup is an aerobic compost tea, which contains billions of beneficial microorganisms and reduce harmful ones."

The water trick will do nothing to increase THC in your buds. Check out this article, Inside the Trichome. THC isn't produced in any plant tissues save the trichome heads.

so would a small tanning (UVB) light in the grow room increase the rate of THC production?

yes, as would a reptile style "black" bulb, but you should only use it in LATE flowering (like the last couple weeks) and then only about 2 hours out of the light cycle or you'll burn your plants.
