Why, thank you for noticing
It's my Mac HD thing which is pretty much just the osx version of 'My Computer' and likewise it's the only shortcut that has stay on your desktop no matter what. Luckily though you can customize pretty much everything on this system and I found the Hitchhiker's Guide to be much more pleasing.
I fucking love The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Ah the books are fucking killer man. There's actually 5 of them in the series but you can get em all in one big fatass Hitchhiker's Guide. Douglas Adams has the most original sense of humor I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I'm so tempted to give away a couple spoilers as examples but I probably shouldn't..

Yeah he's got a few things in there that aren't exactly recreational. I'm guessing he just had a collector mentality (if you couldn't already tell).

I had 10.5.4 but I updated to 10.5.7 yesterday.
To change any folder icon like your Pictures, Music, and Apps just right click the folder and get info then select the icon in the upper left hand corner and paste whatever icon you want to use in there. That's how I changed everything in the Finder window and the Don't Panic thing. You can use pretty much any image file for these.
Customizing your dock is a little different and you need to download an application called Candy Bar. Might take a minute to get familiar with it but it's capable of quite a lot. You can only use mac's ICNS icon format for dock icons though. Do a little googling to find some icon sets then pick and choose what you want and voila
