Betel nuts! It's one of the most popular drgus in the world, but its popularity never really spread to America. If you haven't tried these, I recommend trying to seek them out.

In keeping with the American tradition of outlawing the use of substances favored by minority populations, the sale of betel nuts for human consumption was made illegal 4 or 5 years ago. The good news is, no law enforcement officer has any idea what a betel nut looks like. I've found sliced and whole nuts at a local India Imports mini-mart, sold in unlabelled bags (a stuffed-full sandwich bag costs $3), and you can certainly buy them online "for non-consumptive purposes" :wink:

The nut by itself tastes kind of funky and peppery, but this can be fixed by mixing it with mukhwas. Mukhwas is a delicious Indian after-meal snack/breath-freshener sort of thing, made from sugarcoated anise seeds and other aromatic flavors. Mixing these in with the betel nut keeps your breath nice and fresh.

And apparently this isn't just some stoner abomination of betel use... when I bought my betel today, I bought a jar of mukhwas with it, and when I was paying, the woman behind the counter recommended mixing the two together (which I'd already planned to do). She said that they use to sell them mixed together, but had to stop because young children love snacking on mukhwas. The mixture is pretty similar to the pan pirag that used to be sold on the internet, but it tastes better (not sickly saccharine). I add a little baking soda to the mixture to extract the drug more efficiently (I've got some slaked lime coming in the mail so I can start mixing it more traditionally)... I don't notice much of a potency increase from the soda though.

So what's so great about betel chewing? The effect of the active chemicals (arecoline and arecaidine)is fairly similar to nicotine, but to my body it's a lot more pleasant than smoking a cigarette. At typical doses, it gives you a nice relaxing sense of well-being (this is enhanced greatly by smoking weed).

For example, today I was feeling pretty angry and unsettled. I toked and toked and couldn't shake it, so I decided to go for a walk, the Indian Import Store was just a convenient endpoint (I had no idea if it would be open or not). I'd bought betel there before about a year ago, but when I ran out I somehow never got around to getting any more. I got to the store still feeling :crankey:

, the walk didn't calm my nerves at all. But the store was open, so I got my betel and mukhwas... as soon as I got out of the store I tore open one of the bags of betel threw 7 or 8 thin slices in my mouth along with a little mukhwas and started chewing... and all of a sudden I started feeling good. Really good.

The high is very pleasant and cerebral. Much like nicotine though, if you overdo your dose without tolerance, you can get a nasty headbuzz and start feeling ill. That just means use a little less next time :wink:

it's a learning experience. It's a productive drug too, I'd say it's more effective than caffeine for mild stimulation, and at least for me it's more effective and pleasant than tobacco.

Plus, if you're a stoner (which you should be if you're here at the Growery), then you know how annoying drymouth can be. If you chew betel, this isn't a problem. Betel stimulates the secretion of saliva! I know this probably sounds weird, but part of the pleasure of betel-chewing is the pleasure of salivation. I think you stoners should be able to understand where salivation could be pleasurable.

So in summary: Buy them, try them, love them.
