DIY- Build your own Aeroponic cloner!

Well, by coming here you have found the culmination of many days of research, reading, browsing green forums, my own blood and sweat , a few hundred dollars at home depot and the local hydro store, a few joints , maybe a bong rip or two , and lots of patience .
Here's the unit I built before.
Lesson learned, do shit right. It leaked and since im OCD about stuff it just drove me nuts. Don't skimp out and use a 2 and 1/8" hole saw, USE 2".
Now moving past our mistakes, Onto the cloner!
So now that you see the beauty you'll end up with, are you ready to get started?
Right on! Here's what you'll need
Supplies: 20ft 1/2" PVC (Home depot has for $1.80 per 10ft) 3 1/2" T's 4 1/2" Elbows 1 1/2" threaded/slip (to screw into the pump) EZ-Clone Misters (.50 ea at your hydro shop) 35 2" net pots 35 2" neoprene collars PVC glue Weather stripping 18Gal RUBBERMAID ROUGHNECK (Don't use anything else. IT WILL LEAK) 396GPH pump
Got all that? Great, now here's the tools you'll need!
Tools: Power Drill Sharp pocket knife 2" hole saw Ruler Masking tape PVC Cutters Needle Nose pliers 11/64 drill bit
Once you have all this, your set!
Start off by placing the nets onto the tote lid to get a good idea of where they will end up.
Next, start making your measurements!
Pro-tip: Have odd numbered sites, that way you canstart with a hole in the center!
Remember, that with a 5 x 7 setup like I did, one net will be in the direct center of the lid. This makes it easier to align all the others.
Pro-tip!: "Measure twice, cut once!".
Next, measure out your PVC and plan out your loop on the top of the lid.
Pro-tip: When cutting, leave an extra 1/4" or so. Mistakes happen!
All planned out!
Pro-tip: If you get your loop perfect and tight, you may want to glue the outside so you don't have to take it apart and back together! If you do, skip the next gluing parts.
Glue it all together now!
Pro-tip: Be carefull. This shit sets FAST.
Walah! Next we want to mark the mister points to achieve full coverage!
Now drill the holes and screw in your misters!
Pro-tip: Drill with the 11/64 bit, and then take a screw and run it through all the holes to set some threads for the mister heads.
Now put on your weather stripping! Don't want leaks do we?
Now test out how it fits in the tote.
Pro-tip: Glue a 1/4" piece of PVC under the end of the pump to support it. This way it wont lean at all!
Now, cut the bottom halves of all the nets off. Yup. It will make sure the cuttings roots don't get tangled in them. That way when you move them to veg you wont destroy the root systems you've worked for!
Now put some water in that bitch and see if it works!
And now you've got a perfect clone box with 35 sites that will pwn the shit out of anything sold online and you can do it yourself!
I've got roots in 4 days!
Now time for a blunt of some dank homegrown bud!
Any q's or comments feel free to post em!
PEACE!
P.s. I sell these units all-inclusive for $160 shipped to your door. If you want one without the hard work, fuck ups, and dumping tons of cash to do it right after messing it up, contact me.

Very fuckin nice! Excellent write-up...I do believe I'm going to have an aerocloner in the near future. Let's say everything goes according to plan and you already have all the tools, what is the total cost of materials for this thing? Also, what do you personally use in your cloner as far as water type and/or rooting compounds?

Use straight water, I add a little rooting formula (wont hurt), then just a touch of Hydrogen Peroxide to prevent bacteria, and then PH Balance it with PH Down. Dont use lemon juice or other stuff as it will make things grow in your water.
Total cost if you have all tools? (Close estimates rounded up) Pump $25 Nets + neoprene pucks $25 Tote $15 PVC parts and lengths $15 Misters $5 Glue $5
Joints to give you patience and insight $10
So I'd say $100 straight up.

as long as the water dosnt settle and stagnate its fine....just keep it aerated and moving......your nute solution can grow things in it too if you let it stagnate

The pump does a pretty good job of aeration when the misters come on and also water stirs up.
I plan on adding air stones to veg and flower stations

just curious, would misters/foggers still be effective if for example i make an easy cloner duplicate of your DIY, but double the tub size to a 37 gallon so increase the pvc lengths and number of misters. my question is would the 400 GPH be sufficient enough to supply adequate water to all plants evenly?

This design cost me $75 for 15 sites, which can easily be expanded to 30 for 15 more bucks. The only issue I had was leakage which was fixed by lining the container with a contractor bag.
Basil showed roots in 2 days with this system, most of my other herbs took about 6 days to show root development. They will be ready for transplant in 4 more days if I had to guess. That makes for 10 days to get strong, healthy cuttings rooted. Not bad at all.
Good tek, thanks!

Nice job on making an aeropnoic cloner. I'm in the process of building a grow box, actually two. I was thinking, I don't have the room for this size tube. Could this be scaled down, let's say two foot wide, and 1 foot tall.
Do you think that the same guts could be used to start clones?
I'm thinking yes.
Any thoughts?

Very Nice AZ.
Do you put any rooting hormone in your water with this, or do you just spray plain water on them and see roots in 4 days?

This works quite well! I use tap water with a tiny bit of rooting hormone and a little bit of h202, roots appear between 3-10 days. No cutting has taken longer than 10 days to produce enough roots for replanting. Produces healthy, vigorous cuttings.

oh and one other question-
if I was to try and build a smaller version of this (I only need 5-10 clones at a time anyway) how would you go about calculating the distance between sprayer heads, and how many GPH do I need? do you calculate GPH in terms of each sprayer head needing a certain amount of waterflow, or in terms of reservoir size? does PSI matter more than GPH?

I don't mean to dig up an old topic, but I've recently been presented with the opportunity to get some clones. My grow space is small, but will fit one of these tubs with a couple of feet of headroom until I move it into a bigger space. I don't want to pass the up the opportunity, but I'm wondering if six or so will be enough to get started?
How full do you fill your tub with water, and have you ever had a leaking issue with the rubbermaid roughneck?
Do you use any medium in your basket cups?
What temperature does your cloner space run at?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
[edit] Do you run your misters on a timer or on at all times?

There are usually some bugs to work out as far as leaks go.
I don't use a medium myself until I have a good bit of root growth.
I myself run all my rooms at 70 to 75 degrees.
I run my pump 24/7, but others like the 15 minutes on and 30 minutes off though out the day.

I'm going to start with six clones I think. I'm considering bigger baskets so more like 12 or 16 total instead of 35 in my rubbermaid. Is this reasonable or should I just opt for the 35 for for capacity later? I'm thinking with less baskets, the clones I do start can get a little larger. Thoughts?
Also, do you use your cloners until you have good enough root growth to transplant? Or do you leave your plants in your cloner clear until harvest? Or can you do it either way? Pros or cons?
Also, do you fill your bin about 1/2 full?
Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions, I very much appreciate it guys!!

I say opt for the 35, if you need less you can place the others a part if you plan on growing with this system.
I use mine just for clones and starting seedlings.
As far as filling goes I usuall fill to about 4 inches above the pump.

Okay I'll go ahead and do the 35. Do you transplant to another aeroponic setup? (I've read up on stinkbud's and considering going that route)
Is it possible/beneficial to transplant to soil?
I don't want to blast my new clones with an HPS as I know they don't need a huge amount of light to root, would a few CFLs be sufficient? And what light cycle do you run your cloner on?
Thanks again!!

No I use a drip system for growing and aero for clones.
You could transplant to dirt as for beneficial no clue being I don't grow in dirt.
CFL's will get the job done no worries.
I run my lights on a 12/12 most the time, 18/6 works as well.

Do you move your clones to your drip system? Or just grow them out til harvesting from the rubbermaid cloner? Sorry I'm obviously not getting something.

I go straight to my drip in the flowering room.
I only root with this for now I plan on playing with it more in the future tho.

Stoney, do you have a grow log of your current setup?
I'm going to build one of this cloners today and hopefully get some clones started this weekend. How long do you leave your clones in your cloner to root? And how many CFLs do you use? I have the capacity for 10 but figure that'd be over kill.
When your clones "grow up" so to speak, is it possible to harvest more clones from clones?
[edit]Many thanks to aznshroomer, looking forward to your aeroponic flowering guide!
Also, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions Stoney!

No sorry I have yet to post pictures of my cloner, sorry.
I usually let them get about 6 to 7 inches of root before transplanting.
To root I only use one 14 watt/60 watt output/.
You can take clones from clones, this is best done during veg.
"Also, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions Stoney! "
No problem at all, that's what we're here for.

Great, thanks again for your input and help.
Should I worry about the temperature of my water in my rubbermaid cloner? I've heard it's better warmer, would it be worth getting an aquarium heater or something for it?

Yes heat is your friend when it comes to roots.
I think the goal temp. is around 75 to 80 degrees.

Good deal. Does the cutting need anything in the neoprene pot with it or just the collar to hold it in place? Like, does the root literally just float in the air and the water sprays on and around it? Sorry, I want to make sure I understand it all correctly.

If anyone would like a parts list spreadsheet with links of aznshroomer's aeroponic cloner, I've posted one here: http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/373118#373118
Hope this helps!

You can use a clear box but your gonna be cleaning algae out of it a lot. Plus light isn't all that good for the roots.

I built my first cloner and it works great. The only problem is a slow leak from the lid. Can someone put detailed instructions on how to leak proof this thing. Thanks!

Instead of the piping couldn't you just use an ultra-sonic fogger and a small computer fan?

You could but then that wouldn't be an aeroponic cloner. There IS however a whole subset of fogponic cloners that I hear work pretty well. Well, some of them work nicely, some of them are piles of horseshit. I think some work still needs to be done but it sounds awesome if you get it right.

I got the idea from some techniques I use in cloning Nepenthes and figured it just seemed like an over simpler build. And though I'm sure it would work if given the time, I decided to break it down after three days. The RH,in my basement(16%), was just grotesquely low and started doing a real number on the clones after the first day. Later I put a dome on, and the cuttings did perk up, but I figured it defeated the entire purpose of the cloner
I might try it again once I get some free tent space, and able to keep the local humidity higher, while not sacrificing air flow. If not, it just doesn't seem to be worth the extra trouble

Help, I built a 5 gallon bucket version of this. My problem is I smell inside the manifold and the glue fumes burn my nose. This can't be good for my babies. I put it in my bathtub and ran it for two days trying to flush it but the fumes are still as strong. Anyone else get this?

What kind of glue did you use and did you give it sufficient time to dry or cure properly?

usually PVC glue off gases and sets pretty quickly. But I could imagine if air wasn't able to actually escape your pipes, that the glue wouldn't set correctly, and that water would only exacerbate the issue.
But I'm totally guessing. So take it for what it's worth

Ok I got this thing running and it leads me to more questions. How much water spraying is to much. I have a 290gph pump with 8 easy cloner heads. The pressure is not a power washer but it is seriously raining in and out of my bucket when I lift out the net pot. My cutting has water dripping off it. Should it be this wet or have a chance to dry. Don't know how to post pics.

I don't think this is an issue. I was talking to the guy at the hydro shop, and his EZCloner had 12 of the little red sprayers, and a 550+ gph pump...
As long as there aren't any leaks, I think you'll be fine.
How tightly do your sprayers fit into your pvc pipe? Mine didn't fit so tightly and had water running out underneath. Before I sealed the lid with silicone, I put a ring of silicone under each of the sprayers to see if I could increase the pressure a little.
I just finished making a 16 site aero/vegger with aznshroomer's tek. I'm going to use it to flower a small SOG as soon as my fan and filter get here in a couple days...

yep the Guy at the store hooked me up with the pump and spray heads so I know I got a good match for my bucket. I have no leaks. My heads fit tight. I just wonder should they be allowed to dry some. It looks like the tips are starting to turn brown. Should I add some hydrogen peroxide. Temps between 70&80.

hi just building your setup looks good , do you leave pump running 24/7? and do you need any air intake into the system?

Yes 24/7 seems to work out just fine. Air stones aren't needed, and you should change the water at least every two days.

I haven't changed my cloner's water in three weeks. With such a low PPM, there's not all that much to screw up as long as your temps are under control.
I made the mistake of leaving a 500GPH ecoplus pump on 24/7 and it made the temps way too high. Ten days, no roots, rotting stems. Put it on 30/30 and three days later, they all rooted. Now that they have rooted, I'm just vegging them there and I have the pumps on 30 and off 60.
Awesome shit, but be careful if you're running 24/7.

Do you think using PEX and brass fittings would work? Alot easier to build using zero pvc or glue.

Why can't I use this "cloner" to take the plant to fruition. And if its the dimensions that are too limiting, then would it be possible to build a unit that was capable of taking the plant from tiny plant thing to fruiting plant thing. camplo
ps- here I was thinking I was all cool and original. Your design is exactly what I was dreaming up. Nice work.

I use a bucket, same setup.. never found a decent seal for tubs that didn't leak water somehow..
also, im considering doing away with the net pots their fucking pointless, just make the hole a little bit smaller so you can put just the neoprene piece in.
other then that, same shit different day.. fun project, for $50 you can get a 14 site cloner bucket setup and running.
