    #240423 - 06/17/09 01:59 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

anyone know about that stuff?  im planning for some new stuff and im wondering if galaxy digital ballasts can be switched to 240v?

and anyone built a timer box (to run off 30a 240v line) and got some words of advice? lol

im posting in TSL because this isnt a cultivation question, and nobody goes in cultivation anyway

The timer you can find at Home Depot or Lowes must the time, as well as some hydro shops.

As for the ballast tho I'm unsure about the galaxy brand, but my sunway it is as easy as first making sure it's unplugged of course.

Then remove the cover and there is a box with two wires one plugged to a poll called common and the other to a poll labeled 120v to changed it all I have to do is move that wired to the poll labeled 240v and of course order the new plug set and/or pig tail.

I have thought about changing over to 240v myself in the near future.

Yeah man by using more v's results in less kw.

The electric companies charge by the kw.

actually thats not exactly true.  watts are watts, no matter what you do.  your amperage is what goes down.

(watts) = (amps)x(volts)

my purpose is that i'm planning on moving to a new place and am looking into using the clothes dryer circuit to run lighting.  dryer circuits are 30amps @ 240v.  that translates to 7200w peak, or 5760w sustained (over 3 hours is sustained, and sustained rating is 80% peak).

with a timer box on the 30a/240v clothes dryer circuit, i could run 8 600w lights at the same time with capacity to spare.  this would also allow me to user more safe timer options by having a high capacity relay rather than plastic box plug timers.  this would also free up household circuitry which would be safer for running all the other 120v stuff while living in the house and also running normal household items.

That's why I always add a new breaker to the breaker box and run an independent power supply to my rooms. That this time I just break it back down to 120 there beginning everything I run is 120 now.

But according to my sunway 400 digatal at 120v I use 1.5 kwhr, if I switch to 240v I would be running at 1.0 kwhr. Not a big drop but a drop none the less.

It is much safer as well.
