Around here we use shad but yeah.
There has been a lot of near record fish caught this year such as Blue catfish, and strippers.

Sturgeon are mostly caught and kept for their eggs or caviar. Not to sure that the meat of a sturgeon would be all that great being they are a bottom feeder like carp and suckers. And most sturgeon lakes and river are under strict seasonal restrictions. Michigan had laws making it illegal to take or possess sturgeon unless you had been picked out of a lottery of people and were lucky enough to get 1 of the 50 permits issued. I also believe it was county wide rules, since some lakes and streams had bigger numbers then others.

dude, sturgeon is some of the best white fish out in those rivers in my opinion and are very legal to fish for if you are up to date with the season and measurements standards/requirements. A bitch to fish for to most people & takes all day plus a lot of times its a no-go. How ever when you get a take home you dice the goods up, batter, deep fry, serve and eat. They are a fresh water fish I have never heard of them being in lakes... not saying they haven't been stalked like that before
As far as it it being country wide...not so much, they are still havin events where I am from when in season. I never knew that people were so concerned about them though. I will keep it in mind.

I am not sure about anything other then michigan rules on sturgeon. And lakes are fresh water along with rivers. Oceans are saltwater. Anways Black lake up in northern michigan where i grew up, had strict rules on fishing for sturgeon. Actually michigan as a whole had stict rules on sturgeon fishing. I don't dout that they are good to eat, and i could only imagine the fight you get from one of these monsters.
Sturgeon are getting endangered due to the fact they are bottom suckers and highly prized for their caviar, with a slow growth rate and mature late in their lives.
here is a little info from wikipedia.....
over 20 species commonly referred to as sturgeon. One of the oldest families of bony fish in existence. Sturgeons ranging from 7–12 feet (2-3½ m) in length are common, and some species grow up to 18 feet (5.5 m). Most sturgeons are anadromous bottom-feeders, spawning upstream and feeding in river deltas and estuaries. While some are entirely freshwater, very few venture into the open ocean beyond near coastal areas. Several species of sturgeons are harvested for their roe, which is made into caviar - a luxury good which makes some sturgeons pound for pound the most valuable of all harvested fish. Because they are slow-growing and mature very late in life, they are particularly vulnerable to exploitation and to other threats, including pollution and habitat fragmentation. Most species of sturgeons are currently considered either vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered
Sturgeon caught my attention way back in grade school, and had done several project/report about sturgeon since they are so old, huge and one of the coolest looking fish where i grew up. I am also a fresh water fisherman and love the sport, just passing the info
