Orchids!

i've always had a fascination with orchids, but i'll be damned if i ever got one to grow right. i like to see plants' roots, and that doesn't usually fare well with any orchids i've been given in the past.
BUT, i finally went out and got a little one i came across at home depot, and it's actually growing a new leaf, so i must be doing something right.

nice little phalaenopsis you have there, who knows which cultivar as there are thousands and thousands... it will have more roots out of the growing medium than in it by the time it grows up to flowering maturity

Sounds like they are pretty touchy plants. I have always wanted to try my hand at growing orchids. I think they are one of the most beautiful plants in the world (if not thee most beautiful plant). I know my girlfriend loves them because there are so many different colors/variety's to choose from. Maybe I could make it a fun project for her or something.....Got any suggestions on how to grow them? yours seem like they are really healthy.

Truth is..orchids are easy to grow! Just put them in a shallow dish of water and 18/6hr florescent light. There are some very pretty and exotic orchids out there. I've heard of a story where some Indians found and dug up some rare orchids out of a Florida swamp, when they where then arrested with them. An interesting story arose of the court case that with along with theft of these orchids.

At my old job, we used to supply all of Home Depot's holiday plants and Orchids were always the biggest mover in the spring. Well, excepting the fact that the Home Depot employees are completely incapable of even basic plant care so most of them ended up dead.
Anyhow, yours are looking amazing.

Here is a picture of a parasitic orchid, growing off the side of a money tree in my yard. Looks like little ladies in yellow dresses. Bloomed about 3 months ago.
