let's make a real life coastery
all we have to have is something in the water, such as a permanently anchored boat. it has to be 200 nautical miles away from any country.
now other countries don't have to acknowledge us, however their government powers end at the 200 nautical mile part.
any of you millionaires and want to fund my project? 
alternatively, if we find an abandoned structure out at sea, we can claim it as ours!

id be down to live on one for maybe a couple years, id get island fever and go crazy. but the idea of any open society is awesome. i know they have talked about using those floating cities to expirement with different forms of govt, etc. let me know when the shroomery/growery decide start one up. haha

if this really happened
we could turn it into a tourist destination

It's been done in Sausalito, CA 94965
believe me it is not easy to do. You have to be on top of things as far as upkeep and maintainence go or else you can end up in serious legal problems when your seastead goes floating away and runs into some rich assfuck's private helicopter pad or damages some dude's pleasure yacht. The salt water and salt-air tends to corrode things very quickly so you will need a large 'zinc' anode on the seastead to keep your fittings and anchor chain from electrolysing into the seawater and rusting through. Even if you don't use any electricity onboard your vessel will still electrolyze just from the static electricity in the air!
look up a story/film called "The Last Free Ride" it's a little known docu-drama about the "anchor-out" people of sausalito during the late 60s and through the 70s and 80s. people still do it today though not on such a scale and it is generally frowned upon by local authorities and citizens alike. At one time many free spirits inhabited Richardson Bay in California and had extensive squator markets where local artists and artisans pedalled wares up and down the waterfront.

we're gonna do it different and get the necessary 200 nautical miles away from any country so we have our own laws though
