Depends on your style of growing.
I have had 15 plants under one 400 watt hps. SOG Style.

400 watt is plenty for 6 plants, in fact that will take care of 15 plants easy. I used a 400 MH in a 6x12 foot space with fantastic results. You have plenty of light. If you want to upgrade to probably the best bulb anywhere, look up the SAN AGRO bulb, it's a 400 watt hps with an extra 30 watt element in there that produces the blue light that the hps does'nt emit very well. So you have the extra output plus the benefits of;
Better light spectrum
and you don't need a special ballast, they work and designed for a standard 400 watt ballast.

I'm also using a 400 watt metal halide, remember CFLs are not the best for trichome production.Go get yourself one on ebay for 80 bucks.

The amount of light you need runs in parallel with the amount of space you use to grow in.  Larger areas require more lights to create an adequate foot print for your plants to utilize.  While it is true you can use a 400 watt light to grow in a large area, it would be better utilized in a smaller cabinet. a 3x3 grow space would be enough for 6 plants (depending on your method of growing) and would provide adequate light for your plants to use (just a few watts under 50/sq ft).  When i first started out i had a 4x8 space with 5 plants underneath a 400 watt light.  While i could have realized better buds and a heavier yield with a smaller space, my grow came out ok.

You will want to use 4 plants in a square per 400w HPS, so I would recommend adding a total of 8 plants and have 2 400w lights total.

1 400w light will not do a good job on 15 plants, you will get far less better results.

Each one of my plants averaged about a half ounce to an ounce of dried bud. I had almost equal to a gram per watt with 15 plants under ONE 400 HPS.
It CAN be done.

You may get a half to an ounce per plant, but quantity is not quality.  The distance the light is away drops the potency dramatically.  Having 4 plants in a grid lets all the bud get within a foot of the bulb.

My light was 5 inches from the tops of the plants and the nugs were as compact as they could get.
It was quality AND quantity. Simple as that.
Thats the WHOLE point of SEA OF GREEN. To fit as many plants as possible and have an even canopy. I had a mega garden with a 15 site tray, and the 400 watt hps was right over top of the plants with a home made cool tube.
I could hold the cool tube as tight as I could and not burn my hand at all.

Thats probably the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The light being far away just causes the plant to stretch and be stringy. You would still get potent nugs, they would just be stretchy and stringy and not weigh much, which mine are always compact.
And what does the amount of plants have to do with how close the light is any ways? Have you ever even grown marijuana?!?

Yes, distance from the bulb will cut down potency.  Don't get me wrong, you can still get dense and sugary bud being farther away from the light, but if you want that one hit wonder dank that glistens you aren't going to get it without intense close light.  Why do you think the amsterdam shops grow their weed only 4 plants per 1000w hortilux light with no vegetation really going out past the light hood?  They want the strongest buds possible.

Sea of green methods will never get you the yield that thicker taller plants with many bud nodes can.  IMO sea of green is more of a novelty thing that will get you a lot of nice tops, but you will get more yield from full plants.

So you can get nearly a pound off of four plants indoors with one 400 watt light? Is that what your telling me?
Because I can get up to around 380 grams of TOP quality nugs with nearly no stem whatsoever and obviously no seeds. My plants tops are ALL under the light almost directly and arent more then 5 inches from the light.

Yup, I can.  You get good results doing it sea of green thats fine.  I am just saying that you will get more for taller thicker plants in the same square feet area.  Isn't it obvious that taller means more nodes thus more bud??  Unless you are growing some very skinny taller single cola plants (which you may be) you will not fit the same amount of bud nodes.

Potency is NOT effected by the distance from bulb to bud. Potency is determined by genetics unless the plant is severely stressed.

You may be right that you get more bud per harvest from your monster trees under that 400w light but I guarantee that someone growing a sog is more efficient over time. He can grow 2 crops for every one of yours even though they are a bit smaller. You said that taller means more space for bud but thats quite wrong as well, a good sog will have colas arranged vertically about 1" from each other. Without stacking buds, you cannot possibly have more more colas than in a sog; if you do, they are on top of each other and decreasing the effectiveness of your light.

It's called you top your plants twice during veging so that they produce topset that look like a sog arrangement being 1" apart.  Then you also have all the bud under the tops that will add up.  You may be able to grow 2 batches sog for every 1 batch large plants, but you will ALWAYS have a higher percentage of bud nodes produced in a more mature plant because off the pattern of branching.

I do not know how you people can reconcile that proximity to light does not reflect bud potency.  Why do you think the outdoor sun can make more potent bud than any bulb you can buy?  Natural sunlight is far more intense than the best bulb money can buy 1" away from it.  Why do you think people buy fresh bulbs every 6 months to keep intensity up?

I really don't understand what all the fuss is about.. I use a total of 470 wats of light during the cycle, and I don't let my bitches get anywhere close to more than 3 feet away from the light source. But I do a technique called vertigo. My bitches have up to 6 tops per plant. All in the pruning  and tying of the branches so that light is getting to all that I wish to have bud grow. Yes, this is a science and takes some know how and patience to master. But I did notice one thing in ALL of my adventures with the queen of stank, letting her get to close to the light made her unhappy and stressed, and usually browning occured...I put a stop to that shit quick. If your bitches like how close you let them get to your Holy ass light bulb set up, than so be it, mine never like it much because I don't let them..and they reward me with big donkey dick buds that you can form like clay almost because of all the resin....

If your browning then its too hot too close.  Trick is to get it close as possible and get the heat out by fan or having the bulb in a vented hood.

Thats egggzacly what I was saying:) I let my fans do the work though;) Keeps the stalk strong to hold up the weight of the buds and keeps out the heat I don't want.

The only time I want my bitches in heat is when I give them a flame to warm up on
