Automatic soil watering

Has anybody made a successful automatic watering system to use while for instance on vacation? A DIY would be a nice addition to the knowledge base. If not, are there any sites that sell pumps that can be configured to pump X liters of liquid every Y time unit?

ive done this once: the first time i watered, i would see how much i used. then, id fill up the rez w that much water, put my pump in there, and turn it on. i had stakes with irrigation tubes going to each plant. when the water was done, i would just unplug the pump. when i transplanted, say, for flowering, i would water by hand again and see how much water i needed.

Ok, so go down to your local hardwear or plant store and ask the same question and they well most likly show you this glass buble thing. You fill it with water and just push it into the soil. I takes water out of the buble as needed. Same consept as how thoughs dog bowls work. Give me a sec and I'll see if I can find a link.
