switching soil at translplant
    #194188 - 02/10/09 03:18 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

my friend started growing his seedlings in a 70/30 mix of vermiculite and pasteurized compost, but now that he has more money he is thinking of switching to a more nutrient rich artificial soil like miracle grow or even an organic worm castings mix but he heard that you can harm your plants by switching soils at transplant. What say you growerites?

Fox farms...Or mostly any soil from your local hydro store. No miracle grow. Add nutes yourself.

If you are simply transplanting a small plant into a much larger container, by all means upgrade the soil used in the large container most certainly!  However, I would not recommending trying to remove the original mix that is on the seedling's roots, as you do not want to risk damaging them.  Just transplant the entire seedling/root/soil into the larger container with the better soil.  The roots will grow out and be happy for the better mix on their new growth.

^^ agreed.  Also, since what your friend was using almost constitutes a soiless grow (even through there was some compost in it), it should have no problem adapting to the new soil mix you choose.

I'll also second the no no on using MG for your soil.
