Hydroton?

Read somewhere a guy mixed hydroton and some fox farm soil. He put the hydroton on bottom, soil on top. He was using a hydro setup, I think it was a top feed. Has anyone else heard or seen this? I am trying to find the thread as I type this but as of now no luck.

I don't know about soil being used in a hydro setup, it kinda defeats the purpose. Are you sure he wasn't using coco coir? A top feed coco coir system with hydroton lining the bottom of the pots sounds much more likely than soil to me.

I know very little about hydro but I know it's soiless so when I seen that I was like what the hell. What do you prefer coco or hydroton?

They are two entirely different things in my understanding. I use and love hydroton in my DWC system but I don't think I would use it in my ebb & flow. I would like to give coco a try though because it has all the benefits of soil (temp stability, and ease of use) plus its has growth speed close to that of hydro.

I grow relatively small plants and I use 2 gallon trash cans. If you are growing trees I would use 5 gallon.

3 gal per plant, yes, that would be fine.
