Anyone know about mountain bikes?

Ok, so I recently bought a mountain bike, but I had to return it a few days later because the gears were not switching properly ( I know it's a good bike because i've ridden one without this problem).
Anyways I bought another and it seems to be riding better than the last, but sometimes the gears seem clunky when I swith them higher.
Sometimes it doesn't seem to be a difference at all, and other times it seems like it switches two gears at once.
Am I just not switching at the right time (because I don't know much about shifting gears) or is there a legitimate problem with the gears?

Yea, It's all good. It's just so damn frustrating. This is the third bike I have bought. It's such a fucking hassle, these people don't know how to assemble them properly
I'm very pissed, all I want to do is ride my bike.

This is going to be the biggest factor involved here.
If you got an actual brand name bike, from a reputable bike shop, you had better take it back and complain.
If you got it at Walmart, your kinda fucked. See, the people who assemble bikes there get paid PER BIKE. So they just rush right through the shit without ever even testing it out. If I were ever to buy a bike there, I would buy it in the box and put it together myself.
The problem your describing is pretty common amongst bikes with many gears. Help me out...does it have trigger shifters, or the ones that you twist on the handle bars? That makes a little bit of a difference too. Also, check the manufacturer of the shifter. Many things come into play.
Odds are, you can easily take it into any local bike shop and have them adjust it for you for a very minimal fee (the one I used to hang out at will do it for free.)
Thats right, the fat kid knows about bikes!
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?
