Smell problems
    #184217 - 01/18/09 02:30 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I have a nice charcoal filter running 24/7 (cost $350).  I have a nice ozone generator that kicks on every 30 minutes (cost $200).  I have those little Ona odor neutralizing blocks everywhere.  I have air fresheners in every room of the house.  IT STILL FUCKING REEKS.  Argh!

What should I do?  Mini ozone generators in every room of the house?  Time realeased ozone sprayer thingees?  Does anybody have any other ideas?  I'm at the end of my rope here.

What brand of charcoal filter do you have? So far you the 1st person I've read of that has had a problem with one. Everyone else has had good reviews.

It depends on a lot of things if you had an open basement and only grew in the open area around it you could possibly not have full control of odour from the charcoal filter not being able to pull all the contaminated(smelly) air through the filter. Set up properly charcoal filters are very very effective though.

The charcoal filter is right up on the tray practically.  I am not venting the air...I am merely scrubbing.

Maybe I need a bigger one.  Ugh.  This shit is expensive.

So what your saying captain is that if I was to grow in a closet since it's a closed space I would be able to elminate the oder pretty easily?

contain your space, get a fan big enough to control air in that space, send scrubbed air outside. problem solved.

you're either doing something wrong or your grow is too big for your fan/filter

how many plants, what strain, how big of an area? I had 2meters squared of cheese, strawberry diesel, some other ranom crap and I didn't have any problems using a DIY scrubber.

My room is big (12 feet wide, thirty feet long, six feet tall).  I have two trays that measure 40 inch by 40 inch each.  So, the total area taken up by my tomatos and peppers is 80 inches by 40 inches.

I have a 75 watt fan on top of a 12 inch wide and 18 inch tall charcoal filter cylinder.  This setup is sitting at tray level right next to both trays.  Supposedly, this fan and filter are able to clean hundreds of square feet (my ass...).  Up until this point I was merely scrubbing (no venting).  But, I just hooked up a pipe from the fan to an external exhaust to see if it will help any.  I also made it so that my ozone generator kicks on more often.  I put away the Ona odor neutralizing blocks.  They reek almost as bad as the vegetable plants and they don't seem to do anything.  I also turned up my individual room air fresheners to full blast.  I'll give all of these changes 24 hours to take effect and I'll see what happens.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  If this doesn't work I might buy a huge charcoal filter and run both filters simultaneously.

What kind of fan and filter are you using? Is this the first grow with that filter?

I would definitely agree about trying to enclose your space, and venting outside through the filter would be the most efficient solution. If your fan and filter are adequate, you should have no problem eliminating all smell.

Let us know if your changes helped. Good luck!

I think it's because you have them growing in the open in such a huge space. Get yourself some poly and/or build a cabinet for them. There is no sense in having 40"X80" out in the open in such a large room. I'd say its next to impossible to contain and scrub that much air.

Negative pressure is your friend. Don't waste any more money on filters and for your own sake cut out the ozone, that shit will fuck you up.

I'm not sure.  They are pro-quality though.  They were expensive and I bought them at a hydro shop.

My "room" is a basement with an irregular ceiling and ducting everywhere.  Building an airtight cabinet around the whole setup would be difficult.  Once I get some more money I might try though.  Anybody have any suggestion on what material to use and how I should construct it?  How will I avoid massive heat overload?  Two 600 watt HPS's in a tiny enclosed box will cause shit to overheat.  Also, I need to have access to the trays, lights, and such to do work on them.

The easiest way would be to use 2"x2"'s to create a big cube with supports every 12" or so for walls. Just staple some polyfilm to the skeleton, cut some holes, and you're done. I can't see it costing more than 150$.

As for the fan and filter, I would double check when you get home what kind/size (cfm's? duct size?) they are so we can better help you out.

Possibly.  As I said in my above post though it will be difficult to construct a functioning box that will encase everything.

Update:  I started venting my charcoal filter air and I now have my ozone generator on 24 hours a day.  My place no longer reeks but you still catch faint whiffs here and there.  I also smell a heavy ozone presence everywhere in the house.  The furnace is sucking it up and blowing it everywhere.  I know that this isn't healthy.  But, until I get a better setup there is not much I else I can do.

Hope I don't get lung cancer.

I will examine my area and see if this is possible.

Check your fan ratings CFM and see if it matches your room size. If it doesn't then it will smell. You may need another fan and scrubber.

Ozone is not carcinogenic, it does not cause cancer. However it's really bad for you and your plants.
