Yea, I think they should abolish the attendance thing. It is silly.

I prefer it being all exams, marks for attendance/minimal participation is stupid.
i disagree.
i think that at most all you're going to get out of any book or notes is 50% of the class material. sure you can get what's on the test, and pass the test, but you really didn't learn as much as those who went to class everyday and got the teacher's experience as part of their education. so if u never go to class and only take exams, is it really much of an education? is that worth all the money it costs?
edit: take this for an example: the german philosopher Friedrich Hegel published 4 works. these were then used as materials for classes he taught while at the university in berlin. however, the notes on these works that his students took amounts to the equivalent of some 16 volumes. the additional notes have vastly shaped and even reversed what we thought Hegel was trying to say in the book. so you see, there's often more than just the book to learn from...
maybe in a country where education is subsidized students can afford to be more callous towards their education and take it for granted, but i actually enjoy studying at ucla, taking challenging classes, and being buried in work. that's what college is all about. sure there's partying, but you can only expand so much socially in that way.
for me it really just boils down to get ur ass in the classroom!

I learned the hard way to go to class. I chose to go to a rip off school for a couple of years to get a little 2 year degree to make my resume look better...Well, I didn't learn shit...Partly because I knew mostly everything they taught, and partly because I didn't get the experience that they offered. Anyway, I'm out 20 grand, and back at the school at which I started...What a shame.

IMO: what a student gets from school is equivalent to what they put in. I agree that a student who goes to class every day has a "better" education than someone who doesn't.
I just think that the exams should cover notes and quizzes should cover the book. That way if you don't go you fail, unless you can get the material somehow.
I'm paying for the education what I get from it is up to me, and imo not being able to make every class 100% of the time shouldn't cost me a letter grade.

Ehh...I don't know if I agree with the exams covering notes...Maybe a SMALL portion of the exam to give the students who attended the edge up, but not a significant portion...In college students are going to miss, students are going to be hung over and not get good notes, some students just suck at note taking.
I like professors who give grades for attendance like small work in class to get a grade for being there, and the exam is based on the book...The pages you covered and nothing more.
The students who attend class have the upper hand from the grades for attending, and they have the upper hand when they get out of school...Getting recommendations etc...

giving out 20% for just being there is stupid.. I don't care how you spin it. I'm not saying attending class is stupid... you should attend class to make the grade. I don't know what sort of classes you take but the lectures rarely go into more detail than the textbooks with my classes. Labs on the other hand are very stupid to skip IMO.. and cost extra.
