Claim #1: Meth Coffee is advertised as an illicit drug.
Fact: The Meth Coffee bag clearly states it contains no actual methamphetamines. But the last time we checked, caffeine was a drug. So yes, we do market it as a drug. It wakes you up. Our "master druggist" is indeed a master of coffee roasting.
Claim #2: We show meth addicts on our web site and in our advertising.
Fact: The addicts on our web site are addicted to coffee, not meth.
Claim #3: Meth Coffee glorifies methamphetamine use.
Fact: Meth Coffee doesn't glorify methamphetamines any more than Richard Pryor glorified cocaine. Meth Coffee glorifies coffee and the wonderful, legal, kick-in-the-pants it provides. Coffee is a drug, so what is wrong with taking the phrase, "I'm amped on caffeine" to an absurd level? That's what comedians do. If you look at the coffee bag and the web site, you can see there is nothing flashy, sexy, or sane about methamphetamines. We depict a roller coaster ride of paranoia, fear, and insanity on our packaging. Where is the glamor? There is no enticement to do methamphetamines.
Claim #4: Meth Coffee is a "new drug."
Fact: Meth Coffee contains coffee and yerba mate, both of which have been used and approved for use in the United States.
Meth Coffee is great coffee and humor for a mature audience. It's an adult product. Moreover, we think it's perfectly acceptable for parents to show our bag to their children if they deem it appropriate, tell them it's a joke, and start a conversation about drugs, their effects, and the horrifying consequences of abusing them. We believe that stopping drug use starts with education.
What will Madigan do next in her fight against illegal drugs? Try to censor all comedy in the world that has to do with drugs? Eliminate the word Meth from the English dictionary? These efforts are misguided and a waste of taxpayer dollars. The [Attorney General] should be punching drug dealers, not clowns.
Meth Coffee champions freedom of expression. We need more satire and discussion to help stop methamphetamine use in this country, not less.
