whats the deal with curing?
    #161310 - 12/12/08 05:54 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

so my understanding is that curing draws out moisture from the inside of the bud and evenly dries it. also, i hear it converts the chlorophyll into sugars n starches or something. but i dont understand how or why. and why does a plant smell great when its first cut, then smells like hay, and once curing is done, it goes back to smelling great. can anyone splain?

I take a big whiff of my buds every day when curing and I don't recall any unpleasant smells.

Weed is just one of those plants that needs to be cured for highest quality and under certain conditions. Much like tobacco... I believe the chlorophyll evaporates improving taste and a lot of the terpenes (essential/volitale oils) ripen during this time.

They smell like hay prolly cuz it was some bard bud.  Atleast there is bud in OH that smells like barn, cuz i saw it growing in the barn days before.

The cure allows time for various chemical changes to be carried out. The most important of which is the breakdown of chlorophyll. Improperly cured bud tastes 'green', it is slightly bitter and acrid tasting with generally harsh smoke. When you allow the bud to cure, the smoke mellows and allows the taste of the essential oils to come through.

this might be annoying, but how come the chlorophyll breaks down in a curing process and not by regular drying? just trying to wrap my head around it, people always ask me what curing does.

it does break down in regular drying, just not as even or thourough, and there is still moisture within the bud. curing gives a micro climate and allows whatevers left to spread evenly throughout the bud, then when the jar is opened, the moisture evaps or retreats back within the bud and the process is done again. until there is no moisture left. chlorophyll and plant moisture are worked out of the entire bud.

chlorophyll just needs a slow drying process or it's trapped in the buds.

tea is the same way

both black and green tea are the same plant... black tea is dried slowly and the tannis, anti oxidants, misc green shit is evaporated/processed.. green tea is dried very fast under heat and it retains it's green crap

I would say 1-3 weeks.  that bump could have been avoided with a really simple search.  I see at least 8 other threads here (scroll all the way down on this page) about the curing process.
