First plant. How am I doing
#167248 - 12/22/08 06:06 AM (15 years, 10 months ago) |

Hey all, first post. I just want to know how my plant is doing and if it is ready for flowering yet. It is about 8 weeks since sprouting. I have been fertilizing it with a 20-20-20 fertilizer as recommended by the bottle. I am using 3 100W fluorescent bulbs.
Any advice is good advice

How tall is your box? if the plants got plenty of room to grow you could probably veg it for a bit longer. Most people flower at around 12" in small grows.
It looks very healthy and definitely looks mature. You can see the staggered nodes on the second picture.
IME, if you keep fluorescents close, plants don't seem to stretch too much when switched to flowering but that might be strain dependant. What strain are they? looks mostly indica so shouldn't stretch too much anyway so it all depends how big you want your plant.

The box dosnt have a top so it could grow as tall as possible. I keep the lights around 6 inches from the plant.
As for the strain, i have no idea. One of my buddies started it and gave it to me as a seedling when his mom found it. I was just planning on learning with this one and getting some better seeds for the next grow.

One more thing, Should i try to flush out any of the fertilizer before i switch to a 12/12? And do I switch fertilizers at the same time as the light cycle, or will changing too much stress it?

switching nutes with the light cycle sounds good, as does flushing, flushing always sounds good if your using salt based nutes, but remember make sure your soil is high grade, to avoid getting waterlogged, also make sure the plant has presexed before inducing to flower. the only thing i see..........the white pot. i hope light isnt getting to the root zone, other than that it looks healthy, good job!

I did notice the roots surfacing about 4 days ago, so i covered them with another thin layer of substrate. Is that because of the pot?
Also, what is the best way to flush it? Should I just water from the top and let it drain?

Some people do a cross over period. So like you drop the strength of the grow nutes and do a mix of grow and bloom nutes for a couple of weeks around the time you switch the lights. Maybe before you switch if you want the plant to stock up on P before you whack it into flower, just watch you don't over do it.
I have a bio bizz chart that has a cross over of 2ml grow and 2ml bloom for 2 weeks for the first 2 weeks of flower, but each strain/grower prefers different techniques.
The roots surfacing might be from where you water the plant and it's pushing the soil out the way.
Yeah just pour the water from the top and let it drain through and down the drain or something. You want to flush with about 5 times the capacity of your pot. An easier way to judge is if the run off is clear you've probably flushed enough.
Like Johnnyblaze said as long as there is no light getting to the roots it'll be fine. The pot looks opaque so nothing should be getting through, you could always wrap it in a black bag or something if you wanted to be over cautious, but thats up to you.
Keep us updated though dude!

I have never flushed between veg and flower, never saw the need. I only flush when a toxicity or deficiency appears, and before harvest. No need to flush away valuable nutrients. I do like to mix my veg and bloom nutes when switching to flower; I go 50/50 with them for one week.
As far as when to flower, I would say now looks good. Florescent don't have much penetration power, if they get much taller, the lower leaves/buds won't get any light.

clean water or mild nute solution, i dont think the roots surfacing are because of the pot, but put it inside of a black pot anyways,,,it probobly needs to be transplanted though thats why roots are surfacing

the pot is 6 quarts (i think). Is it a size issue, or nute issue.
Also will it harm the plant to transplant now that it is on 12/12 or should i just stick it out and take it as a lesson for next time?

First off that plant looks sick! It's like a mini tree. Also you're giving hope to all the ghetto growers out there. Who'd have thought a cardboard box and some tinfoil could produce such a nice plant! lol!
It's all looking good so far. A couple of the lower leaves (4th pic) look a little yellow, could be the camera though, but apart from that,

Ok new pics today. Also an explanation of my watering system. This really should look good for all of the ghetto growers out there.
First off the plant as she is now.
And up next is the icredibly ghetto setup that is kicking ass!
Pic 1: My ghetto hydro system. The shot glasses are to elevate the pot off of the standing water in the lower tray. The black things are strips of an old tshirt (sanitized) that hang into this tray. When i transplanted into this pot, I wrapped those strips around the old root ball. I made sure to leave enough room for air to get through. The white things are roots reaching down into the water resevoir. I have to fill this once every other day. I also clean it once a week.
Pic 2: The fan. Old computer fan. Taped in. It pulls up air from under the box and it actually swirls the air around the plant and out the top. Hotboxing my closet got way cooler.
Pic 3: The lights. 3 100W CFLs on some random ass stand that has been disassembled.
Pic 4: How the light is held up on one end. Yup, that is tape. And a piece of wood screwed into the wall. Don't worry though, i screwed it into the stud.
Pic 5: Other side. Only had one c clamp.
Pic 6: Surge protector. Notice the SEGA power source. Remember that computer fan earlier? Thats where its getting it juice.
Well now you all know the truth of my ghetto grow! Updates to come!

Let me get this right...Your hydro system consists of old bits of t-shirt wicking water and nutes up to you plants?
I find that amazing that it works... I just wonder how well it will work as the plant gets bigger. It seems to have worked very well so far though.

The soil does stay moist all the way up to the surface though.
I actually found this method on an online grow book. The sad part is I was never able to find it again after that first time.

Holy crap there are a lot of hairs!
Oh and I added another CFL. This one is a 60W but its at 3000K. I think that was a good choice as the 100W are at 6500K(i think, very stoned). I was thinking bout changing one of the three 100W to another 60W. What do you guys think?
Pics once I am less stoned...

So am I doing the right thing by adding the 60W bulbs? Just curious if anyone has any input.

I'd be tempted to leave the higher wattage in as it's CFL's and you really need all the light power your can.
I'm not too hot on the whole colour spectrum thing, but it seems like you'd lose almost half the power, but will have a spectrum closer to what the plant can use for flowering. I'm not sure if this would be beneficial in any way. It may be damaging due to the drop in wattage.
do you have any way of adding the light to the 100w's you already have in stead of replacing it? that will give you the benefit of the 3000K and you gain another 60w of light.

I added another lamp fixture with a 60w in it, and left the 3 100W in. Might try to find another multibulb fixture today.

I find the thing with CFL's is you know you can get them close so you keep buying another one to fill that little dark spot. Then you realise you could have bought a HPS with the money you've spent.
That's cool though man... i'm really lookin forward to the buds produced by that baby.

yeah I know. The biggest reason I'm just sticking it out with cfl's for now is because I am moving to a place where I wont be able to grow at the end of Feb Once I get another place I will be looking for HPS. But for now I'm just working with what I have

Thats cool. I dunno what it is with HPS, but as soon as that baby comes round a grow just seem to go from "I was just fuckin about" to "I'm al capone and shit!"
bit sucky you can't grow again for a while. I've really enjoyed watching this one. If you do go for another set up later on it might be worth looking at DR Penguins clone tent. It's a sweet little thing made out of plastic tubes and tarp. The idea could easily be taken and built with stronger pipe for a grow/flower room. As long as it can support the weight of the light, etc..

Yeah, I really want to ramp up and do a big grow, but that just wont work for a while.
I am going to try doing some bonsai plants, but they will be more of a hobby/art project with little to no budding. They will be up here as i do them though.

Today is the three month mark for her! So I took a few pics.
Pics 1 & 2: The growing cola Pic 3: Single dying leaf (visible in pic 4). From nutrient change? Pic 4: Whole plant Pic 5: Top cola and back left top bud site Pic 6: Took this right before watering. You can easily see a root system in the water reservoir. Pic 7: Well, remember that C clamp holding on the light bar? Well the wood underneath is shrank and the clamp let go. It landed on her. It was resting on her when I checked on her within the first 5 minutes of her light cycle. This is the remainder of the damage! She survived quite well i think!

Bummer about the light. Other than that your plant is looking phenomenal. I hope she keeps swelling for you.
