or go to walmart and buy a five gallon bucket used for mopping, or find a friend with cats who uses the buckets for litter and wash them out, or go to home depot and buy empty 5 gallon buckets, or go to a construction site and get some for free that are being tossed......
there about 80 million things you could use out there that are better then cardboard or plastic milk jugs. If you're growing outside both of those containers will not have enough room for your plants to grow.
Honestly, if i were you, id buy some wood and construct a small box. That way you can fill it with all the soil you want, have multiple plants growing in it at once, and they'll have a good amount of room to grow in.

coda, dont you worry about roots competing? i mean if you build a big enough box, like the size of a bathtub then you really dont have to worry...
and dont forget, any thing you use, give adequate drainage!!!
but like he said youre plants wont like you too much for giving them a tiny space for their veins ya know

why are these going to be on top of concrete?
your description makes me think of you sticking your plants in some urban area by some abandoned shed. they will stick out like sore thumbs sitting on a slab of concrete. At least put them in some tall grass or something.

No, and that link will lead to you a good explanation why not. Not only is that person growing multiple plants in one box, he barely changes the soil in it. The results are pretty damn impressive.

you can do 4 plants in a 3x3 box with no problem. A friend of mine, before he left the country heh, used to grow that way. Got some damn tasty nuggets from it too. Sure you can't cram it full of herb, but damn, done right 4 plants can give you a nice amount of smoke for a small space

indeed. how deep would you suggest making said box? and how would you go about drainage.
im thinkin plywood floor on it, with a shit ton of 1/2" holes...
with maybe 6 lil 1"x1" blocks to elevate it just enough to let drainage occur

you don't really need drainage per se. Here, this is from that thread i linked you too.
Watering Watering is, on average, done once every 3-4 days, when we give 10liters (2.5gallon) water that is fed with Biogreen nutrients. Watering is made easy by pouring the water from a can into drainage tubes that run into the earth, on the bottom of the box, where the water is evenly distributed over all soil. Moment of watering is decided by our tensiometer, an accurate soil moisture sensor. It is important that the soil doesn’t dry out too much because it then loses the “power” to absorb the water from the bottom of the box.
