Portable Air Conditioners
    #14915 - 04/29/08 06:55 AM (16 years, 7 months ago)

Can anyone suggest some decent ones under $300? The ones that go in the window won't do, I want to be able to move it room to room.

how many BTUs do you need? i have a 10K BTU sunpentown which is great for supplemental a/c (i have central air). the sunpentowns are also much more energy efficient than the window units.

if a/c is critical (ie, to be used in a growroom), then buy one with manual controls that will restart after a power failure - many of the a/cs with digital controls need to be restarted manually.

here's a link to the one i own...it's slightly more than your $300 ceiling, but shipping is free...

Well it's 945 sq ft apartment where the central AC is always busted plus it's old and expensive to run. I would like something that could cool the whole place if possible otherwise i can wheel it around every so often or keep it in my room while I sleep, because it gets very hot, 90's up.

10K BTU is only enough for about 300 sqft. it'll definately keep a room cool and dry, but you'll get tired of rolling it from room to room everyday, especially since you have to exhaust out a window...

So I should be a total dick about them fixing my AC because someone stole it this time next time who knows, and yeah it's central the cut the wires and everything took the unit to who knows where.

Wow I've never heard of central A/C theft.

But anyway it would be hard to find a decent unit for under $300. Maybe used. I'm thinking about getting one too it's too damn hot out. The dual hose ones on ebay are like $550 delivered for 11k BTU.

I was wondering that but either way if I bought one It would go on my credit card so I don't know it may be a good investment but I want my moneys worth it better be damn good and no hassle to use either.

It was sold for scrap. That sucks. If you are renting I would insist on it being fixed.

It has been so hard to get them to do it, it's cool now so they probably won't than I will have to call again when it gets warm again next week or few days...... maybe i should just rent one till then maybe? I need it to sleep, I don't sleep well.

we have about 10 of those at work, but you gotta be pretty close to them to feel anything.

i always think about rolling one off with me the day i quit/ fired.

I've never had any luck with portable AC units. I'm sure they exist but I've been through a fair share of crap even after going through hundreds of reviews on amazon.com and other websites. I ended up getting a 12500 BTU window unit on craigslist for 115 bucks.

What went wrong w/ the portables?

I don't think I can install a window unit in my situation as I can't access the outside wall and it's on the 2nd story.

First of all they give off insane amounts of heat through their exhaust out the back which you are supposed to vent out a window. The 3 different portable AC's I've tried the compressor or the whole unit will shut off after a couple of days because it can't vent its self out properly unless you have the things literally right infront of the window which blocks my mother room. Not to mention you have to empty the water from these units and they are expensive and bulky. For me it was just easier to make a false wall and install a wall unit out of a sliding glass door.

Well, I didn't know all that I figured they would be just as good as the ones that go in the window if not better. Now I'm bummed. Theres got be away i can stay cool when the A/C don't work fans aren't enough when it gets hot in here. i work 3rd shift so I sleep during the day when it's the hottest.

They have an obligation to maintain acceptable living conditions, considering what youre paying them each month. Keep shoving it up their ass until they do something about it, even if it is against your nature to do so.

Oh I would call them everyday, when I began to cuss at them they would hang up then I would report them to the BBB, I'll do the same this year.

I was gonna post before I noticed it was necro'd...but now I'm posting anyway, so I'll add my 2 cents.

FWIW I got one of these for my house (not a grow room, just a house) a few years ago. I didn't keep it for more than a week. It actually heated up my room. It just made a ton of water and didn't do anything.

I'm not sure if I got a defective one, but it really ruined my outlook on these things.

--------------------
Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?
