Anyone ever done this?

Taken from a Cannabis Guide posted on the front page under documents I was browsing through:
"BIRTH CONTROL PILLS A solution of one pill to one gallon of water has been reported to cause increased growth speed in tomato plants. It is possible this will help herb plants too. One treatment administered before flowering and one administered a few weeks before harvesting might help the plant mature faster.
One grower told a story of the same type of plants, one administered the estrogen grew to 20 feet, while the other was 7 feet. This may be purely anecdotal, but it may work. Try it and report back to us on results. "
I have actually heard from one source, who I considered unreliable, that you can actually feminized your own seeds with a birth control pill using similar methods. I pretty much dismissed this as myth, but I am wondering, how do they actually feminize seeds?
Also, has anyone ever done anything like this to increase plant growth? It sounds like a myth to me but it was posted in that guide. In any event, it is interesting to consider, and I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's tried.

I would dismiss this one as a myth. Sex is not determined by the mammalian estrogen compounds. As for increased growth rates, yea, myth as well. Here is the abstract for the paper on estrogen's effects on tomatoes:
Quote:
Epibrassinolide-inhibition of development of excised, adventitious and intact roots of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum): comparison with the effects of steroidal estrogens
The brassinosteroid, 24-epibrassinolide, caused observable inhibition of the growth of aseptically-cultured excised tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Best of All) roots at a concentration of 0.01 μM. Root formation and outgrowth in tomato shoot cuttings and root biomass in intact tomato seedlings were also depressed by epibrassinolide, but only at a higher concentration (0.1μM).Concentrations of the steroidal estrogens, estrone and estradiol (as sulphate derivatives), in excess of 1.0 μM, reduced cultured root growth as well as root number and total (but not mean) root length in shoot cuttings. Seedling root growth was only slightly inhibited by estradiol but not by estrone. Both epibrassinolide and estrogens caused morphological abnormalities, such as epinasty and leaf-inrolling in cuttings and seedlings. Epibrassinolide stimulated extension growth of the hypocotyl and epicotyl in cuttings and of the hypocotyl in seedlings, but estrogens exerted no effects on shoot growth.
So at worst it inhibits growth, at best it does nothing...

.... Correct, a stressed female will turn hermaphroditic. A hermaphrodite can then pollinate any females in the area. Is that what you were trying to say?

yes. That's how I was explained feminised seeds come about.

i've heard crazier things like banana peels (almost rotting) in a bag w/ the seeds, because the gas that the peels emits causes the seeds to go feminised... that was the craziest one i heard.

actually, that "theory" is placing bananas underneath an immature, unsexed, plant. The "theory" is based off of the fact that the ethylene gas produced by the fruit helps induce a female sex. It's called the banana religion
Lots of people do it over at gardens cure.

I would love to see a scientific paper about the effects of ethylene gas on sexual distinction in dioecious plants. I has to be less hair-brained than estrogen...
