i don't know how you can mention "mediocre" talent and leave out roger waters' writing abilities.
now, i will admit, i am much more versed in waters-era floyd than syd-era floyd. but i do like syd's stuff, i just prefer the meddle-wall era
imo i think the band was very talented. they pushed the envelope in what could be done in music, in ways that had never before been explored. and they made pretty damn good music out of it.
sure gilmour is not the most insane guitarist evar, but he played very well within his technical ability. some of the riffs and solos he did are still amazing to listen to. time's solo, COME ON! and rick wright on the entire WYWH album...
but roger waters did some brilliant writing for the band. sure, the who's Tommy kind of brought out the idea of a concept album, and DSOTM pushed it further, but how can you argue against the genius that is The Wall? perhaps you disagree, i think it's very well written, both in lyric and in overall plot and theme.
i am saddened by wright's departure, but it is the only journey we are all assured to take.

Well put, man.
It just baffles me to hear someone call Floyd mediocre, not the first time I've heard it though. One has to wonder if they play or write music. I mean shit, I can play a lot of Floyd on the guitar/bass, a lot of it is pretty simple actually. But I can't come close to pouring the amount of emotion into it that they do, let alone dream of writing anything that awesome.
Syd was a visionary an amazing song writer. Gilmour's guitar playing has more emotion than most people bare at a funeral, the guy can do more with 4 notes than most can do with a whole scale. Rick Wright was the musical genius behind the feel and overall tonal weirdness that makes any Floyd song instantly recognizable as Floyd (also probably the most under-appreciated member of the band). Waters wrote The Wall when he was 36, and it turned out to be the definitive musical representation of life and angst . And take a good listen to Nick Mason on the track On The Run and tell me there's no talent there.
Sativus, I'm not sure exactly what about them make you think they're mediocre (aside that you think they exploited Syd...I'd like to know, honestly), but in the end the only thing that music can be judged by is if it moves you or not. By that standard, they're one of the greatest bands to ever exist, IMHO.
Also, I don't think they had exploitation in mind when they wrote tracks like Shine On and Wish You Were Here. They seem more like tributes, especially Shine On.

Sativus said: Well, they don't completely suck, but like Tang said: They're completely mediocre. Anyone who thinks those musicians are talented either wasn't listening, or doesn't understand talent.
Different strokes, I consider all the members of Floyd to be quite talented, Rick Wright especially.
Who would you consider to be a great musical talent if Floyd isn't up to par?
...Bill Bruford... ...Rick Wakeman... ...Chris Squire...
Yes fan?

Not a fan of Jon Anderson's vocals, but I do enjoy their material from '70-'74. Bruford I mention more for his work with King Crimson, though he did well with Yes as well. Squire on the other hand, he was a master of the bass; it's his phat bass riffing that I really enjoy listening to Yes.
Mr. Unga: I hate to say it, but the Wall is my absolute least favorite Floyd album. It just sounds so shallow, lacking in any real depth. I know this isn't how most people percieve it... I just don't hear what people think is so great about it, I guess. And Waters writing mostly strikes me as Emo years before its time... I don't like it from modern emo bands, and I don't like it from Floyd.
I'll admit DSoTM is a well put together album, but it wasn't "pushing the envelope"... they were treading through territory that bands like King Crimson, the Moody Blues, and Yes had explored years before, and generally executed better than Floyd did.

Syd era Floyd was the shit. Past that was meaning it had its moments.
DSoTM is the most overrated album. Animals, Meddle etc. are all much better. The Wall sucks too. Sativus: I love Yes. In fact I was listening to them on the way to work. Prog Rock FTW!
But again, to each their own.

See, that term pedo gets thrown around a lot.
Is a 16 year old guy having sex w/a 16 year old girl a pedophile?
If not, then how is a 30 year old considered a pedophile for doing the same thing?
I think y'all need to look up the definition for pedophile.

Good points. I will agree that Meddle was their peak, after that they weren't as great, but still damn good.
Kudos to all involved, I expected this to turn into a flame-fest like it would on some other sites (cough FARK cough).

First of all
R.I.P. Richard Wright
Second of all,
Most amazing band in the world...remains my favorite...hell, I'm a jazz musician too.
I gotta say though, talent-wise, they are mediocre, but in soul, and in making really great tunes. They are number one in my books. There may be better musicians in the world, there may be more gifted people. But never, never, never, will any band have as much of an impact on my life that Floyd has, and that says it all.
