Don't Waste Those Males!

I thought I'd make a quick post to share a good experience we had with our grow that others might be interested in trying out sometime. We recently had some problems show up with our plants - the leaves were more lime-green than a deep, dark green, and the tips and edges on the older leaves were burning. We were trying different things out on the group of plants to try to fix the problem, but one thing that was holding us back was not wanting to make anything more than incremental changes, since it wasn't clear what the problem was, and we didn't want to make anything worse.
About the same time, sex was becoming apparent, and we found ourselves with two males (we had simply killed the first one that showed up a week before). We realized we could use them as guinea pigs in some experiments, to subject them to more bold attempts to diagnose the problem and find a way to fix it. The main thing was that we weren't sure if it was a potassium deficiency or a magnesium one, so we gave one of the males a good dosage of P/K, and the other a dosage of magnesium that was clearly too large. The next day, the Mg male was showing signs of more burning, with little black spots all along the edges. The main thing, though, was that the color that was lacking didn't return. The K plant; however, actually looked healthier, with the leaves starting to darken up. A couple more days of working with the P/K booster, and it really seemed we figured it out.
The females have been getting what seemed to be the best dosage of nutrients to straighten out the problem. We haven't actually seen them in a couple days because we haven't been around, but we hope to come back to see them perfectly healthy. We actually have a few clones of males that we took when we were simply seeking to build experience with cloning, so I'm thinking some more experimentation will be in order, to see how plants respond to different deficiencies, toxicities, and pH levels. Nothing too serious or anything, and I'll probably document the results to post for others to help them diagnose problems, but I also have a plan for a bigger project along these lines, when space is available (this won't be for months), to create something for the main site that will document deficiencies and other problems. Anyways, I'd definitely encourage everyone to try stuff like this out when they have a male to learn more about what the plants are saying in different circumstances, to help have a better understanding to care for the plants that they actually care about.

Well, I don't have any pictures of what was going on with these males in particular, and they are dead now, but the plan is to do a lighter project like this when the male clones are rooted and grow a little bit (they were only taken to help get cloning experience, but, once again, why just kill them when they can be put to use ), and I'll have some good pictures then. I do have one picture to share from all of this though, and its a leaf from the male that received some bigger dosages of P/K booster to see how it would respond, compared to one of the plants in the main group that was only getting incremental changes in nutrient dosages. It continued to get more dark green from that point, as well.

Cool! I've been thinking about doing some experiments, but I don't have the space for it. Or I have to give up a normal grow and I don't think my friends will agree with that
