ideally i would be off the grid, with a stream running nearby i can mill, and/or with a large solar system and battery supply and capacitors. The way things are going i believe this kind of setup will become cost effective in the near future. The technology in this area is becoming better and more affordable while the price of energy is skyrocketing.

I'd rather have consistancy. Well your consumption would still be fairly consistant.

If you're living far enough out to have a "stream to mill" you may as well just grow them in a backyard/clearing . I mean if a solar setup is going to run you 100,000 and take about 5 years to show a profit why not just buy 30 or so oak trees (large saplings to semi-mature adults), have them planted in a ring, grow them nice and dense for a few years and presto...clearing . But there's always the risk of fly overs etc. Meh. See what fits your situation better. Best of luck.

OR better yet
move to canada.. buy 160 acres of wooded land for like 70grand and make a clearing.

Wont work in northern michigan. Its not suitable for a 100% outdoor grow. Besides 100,000 is rediculous. it would be about 20,000 For the array and instalation (myself.) That solar setup, including batteries, would power my home and enough for two 600w setups. Battery cost would be a yearly expense of 1000$ if the stream thing is feasable the mill matierials cost would almost be nominal. I can design and build it at cost and it would be a fun hobby for a while.
I know it sounds like alot but from what ive observed 20000 + 10,000 for batteries over ten years = 30,000$ just in the 4 coldest months its an average of 400 a month to heat a 1800 sq ft house in that climate. thats 1600$ x 10years = 16,000$ just in the winter at todays rates.
If someone wants to factor in a high and low end rate inrease over 10 years for natural gas im guessing it would be an increase around 8,000$ over ten years (median-rough figures.)
thats 24,000$ just counting winter months. I dont pay attention to the air conditioning in the summer to honestly tell you. Just trying to paint a general picture.
Im also betting that natural gas & natural gas generated electricity will skyrocket in the next ten years as it has been
just guessing here but adding 16,000 for the yearly use that brings us to 40000$ in energy costs from the grid, I can now justify dumping another 5000$ to update the system in 5 years time and/or replace failed pannels.
so in ten years i save 10,000$ on non growing- everyday use energy charges. Multiply all that by 3x if i grow 25 plants.
sorry to derail the thread, but if you happen to have some coin this sounds like a hell of an investment, and there is no paper trail to the utility company.

you know what i did in english class? Hmmmm. Seems like you've got most of it worked out rod. Was just throwing stones to see if anything broke . Quick question. How are growers growing outdoors in Canada but you can't grow outdoors in Michigan? That's kinda funky to me O.o.
Also from what I hear of Michigan from a recent native is that the economy sucks currently and your best best probably lies in the "botanical realm" .
Heating during the winter can be done more efficiently especially if you build or update your house correctly. Look into straw houses. Hope to one day build one for myself. And if you're not being hooked up to the grid then you don't need to worry about safety protocols like a switch to shut down your current going back into the system when they shut it down for maintenance work. Looked at solar over the years and the largest piece of cash usually came in the form of the cells (which you can get second hand still operating at 80% efficiency) and the rectifier which does all the voltage switching.

With Canadians in northern climates I'm sure they have to start in the winter and grow teenagers before taking them outdoors- or into their greenhouses. I guess that allot of them use greenhouses because temperatures at night can drop below freezing as late as may, and as early as September. I know the growth cycle is hard to fit into this short summer. here is a average temp chart for my region.
As you can see, there is 16 weeks, give or take, of warm weather. the temps also tend to swing 25 degrees from cold nights to hot afternoons, daily.
I guess its not that i couldn't do it outside, i just don't think i would have the patients.

we can grow from seed outdoors if we wish.
:S
Starting from clone or pre-vegged helps though.

It seems like you could be in for a big disappointment with an early freeze. I would be bummed to at the end of summer when things finally look nice, then they have to die.

um well if you start your clones and then veg them and put them outside a little bit each day to hardy them up before transplanting outside when the weather is more optimal. It does shave time.

Just ordered a 600w luminex ballast and a GrowBright 600 Watt MH Conversion Bulb last week.
the growbright says it puts out 72k lumens. That was the best I can find.
Someone needs to make 600w Metal Halide bulbs damn it.
