How are the calories empty?  I've never understood.  If they're there they're calories, right?  If not, they aren't.

It just seems like one of those 'scary stats' to scare you away, like Trans Fat.  I have not seen ONE item with trans fat in it EVAR, but they advertise its' absence like it was the plague!

Trans fats used to be all over the place, their absence is relatively recent. And, as you note, highly advertized.

I believe alcohol is referred to as empty calories because there's no protein, fiber, or really any other decent nutrients in there.  It's basically just carbs and calories.

Alcohol is just calories from a nutritional point of view.  We turn it to acetaldehyde which is shunted into gluconeogenesis via pyruvate, IIRC.
