Best way to clone?

Ok, so I've picked a nice branch, got my sterile knife and cut a 45 degree angle incision. Straight to the gel, quickly.
Then what?
The only successful clones I ever had was when I put them directly into soil. Even so, only a % of them lived...other times I've lost the ones I tried at with the same method.
I hate it, because I'm not sure if they have put out roots yet. What goes wrong and causes clones to fail and not root? Is there any answer for that?

You want to have pretty close to a even amount of air to water. One of the reasons that rockwool and plugs work well is they both hold lots of both. Soil works but it isn't the way I'd recommend to anybody, if you don't have access to rockwool or plugs you can go with a mix of 50/50 perlite and vermiculite.
Then there is water cloning but if you don't have anything that can spray water ez-cloner style you can make a water cloner easy and fairly cheap. Use a tray a pot or anything that can hold water. Then put a bubbler in it like or air-stone for a fish-tank. A small water pump like the kind used in those fountains that go in a coffee table to stir the water around are good to have in there. Then put a lid on it that can hold the cuttings in place and be sure the bottom inch of the stem is in the water. Sort of a deep water culture setup for starting clones. Change the water often.

Air embolism is what I believe kills most clones. When I remove a choice clone from the plant, I go straight to a bowl of water, placing cut end in about 2 to 3 inches under water and then cut it taking about an inch to two off under the water to keep air from rushing, then to gel, then to rapid rooter plugs, cloner, or soil in a small cup.

Cool man, thanks. I hope to build one of those cloners eventually but I just don't have the time or money to at the moment.
I do have a lot of perilite though. I suppose I could find some verm if I looked around at walmart and junk. I think the perilite I have is that shitty miracle grow infused stuff though Maybe I could wash it and sterilize it. How about perilite coir at 50/50?
Maybe I'll order some rooter plugs off of ebay but my stupid bank card is lost The hydro store is an hour away and thats a lot of gas. Unless any of you guys got some you'd wanna trade

Exact technique i use as well.

I always thought the cut then cut again underwater thing was just unnecessary, but if you guys have a good ratio of survivors, then fuck, its worth the extra step!
Anyone have experience with 50/50 coir/perilite?

100% success ratio with clones. Maybe every now and again Ill have one or two that are a bit slow. But thats what happens when you clone 75-100 babies at a time.

I hear that Hawk. I often have 4 ez-cloners 120's running at a time and I flip when just one doesn't root.
Rasjeph the coir perlite thing sounds fine but I'd (and this is just me) use more like 65/35 with the higher number being the perlite

Don't joke around here. I have 40 acres of land with plants scattered all over it and I'm gonna have to hire trimmers. Every year they get more and more wanna be hippy like and the granola eaters drive me nuts.

I'm no granola hippie, but definitely willing and able to live in a tent

The simplest budget way for non-professionals:
Make cutting. No gel or hormones required.
Put stem through small hole in styrofoam (or other flotation device).
Float in several inches of plain tap water in a bucket or tote with 1" or more of the stem in the water. No bubbler required.
Suspend a 13w CFL 8-10" over the cutting/s. Close the opening as much as possible to keep humidty high or cover opening with clear wrap with the bulb over the wrap.
Change water every 3 days.
Roots in 10 to 12 days. I always got 100%.
Adding a bubbler or aeroponic mister will get you there a couple of days sooner. Everything else is just for ease of production.
